When the short-term effects of surgery, like wound discharge and incision pain, have subsided, many people are left with an excess of scar tissue. And while surgeons try to make the scar as small as possible, there are many things that influence what a scar will end up looking like. Some of those things are in our control, but many factors are not. The few scarring factors that you can’t control are age, genetics, race, depth of incision, and scar placement.
